MEDICAL FIRST RESPONDER COURSE STARTING SOON!
Now Accepting Applications
Class Starts: September 10, 2007
Course will be held at:
Marquette General Health System’s School of EMT in Marquette and at various Hospitals throughout the Upper Peninsula
Medical First Responders are the initial level in pre-hospital care. They are responsible for emergency first aid and basic life support of the patient prior to the arrival of the ambulance. When you arrive at the scene of an emergency, you must be able to think quickly and act competently; your patients’ life may depend on it. You will be trained how to deal with emergencies that you could encounter at anytime. You will be trained in a wide variety of medical skills and equipment including airway control, backboards, spinal immobilization, oxygen therapy, patient assessment and splinting.
The program consists of clinical and didactic hours. The clinical portion will include rotations in pre-hospital and in-hospital settings such as EMS, Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room, Respiratory Therapy, etc. The didactic portion will consist of quizzes, homework, lectures, and a written and practical exam after each module.
The cost of this course is $600.00 (includes books and uniforms). Additional National Registry and State license fees will be the responsibility of the student after the course ends. All applications must be received by August 17, 2007.
A recent EMS recruitment drive by Michigan’s Region 8 (Upper Peninsula) Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Network has spurred a great demand for this level of EMS education. Some local EMS and Fire agencies throughout the Upper Peninsula have expressed interest in recruiting new members and may pay a portion of the course fees for eligible candidates. Others may be able to assist with tuition assistance. Boundtree Medical a vendor of emergency medical equipment also has their legacy scholarship program, aimed at promoting the professional status of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). This program will award $50,000 in scholarships to children of EMTs and Firefighters interested in becoming EMTs, or furthering their certification by becoming Paramedics. The scholarship awards will be available nationwide for those who fit the eligibility criteria and are interested in pursuing a state approved certification program.
The course will begin on September 10, 2007. Classes will be held on Monday and Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the Northern Michigan University, University Center Room 2306 in Marquette and will be available at other Hospitals around the Upper Peninsula via videoconference. The actual availability of classes at local Hospitals will be dependent upon minimum enrollment at each site. There will be two Saturday classes in the program from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The required clinical hours will vary.
