School of Radiography
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1. Does
Marquette General Health System still operate the Radiography Program?
Marquette General Health System maintains ownership and accreditation
of the School of Radiography. Marquette General through an affiliation
agreement with Northern Michigan University and Finlandia University
provide graduates an Associate Degree. All services provided by
NMU and Finlandia to its students are also available to our radiography
students.
2. When is the deadline for application into the program?
Applications
run from January 1 through May1 of each year. Applications will
not be accepted after May 1.
.How
difficult is it to be accepted into the program?
The increased interest in radiography over the past few years has
increased the number of applicants applying for a limited number
of positions in our program. MGHS seeks to admit students who can
provide evidence of potential to succeed in the health care profession
of Medical Imaging Sciences – Radiography. Our Admissions
Committee evaluates many factors when selecting a student. No single
attribute will guarantee acceptance into our program.
4. When will I find out if I have been selected for the next radiography
class?
The
Admissions Committee will complete interviews and selection by the
fourth week of May.
5 . Why do you limit your enrollment into your
program?
A limited capacity provides students from a broad range of ability
levels a one-on-one learning environment of guidance and feed-back.
Each 2-week clinical rotation will have one student at a time to
allow the student enough opportunity to reach competency in procedures
performed in that clinical rotation.
6 . What do you look for when evaluating your
application candidates?
The Admissions Committee looks for individuals who have a strong
academic background in biological sciences and communication. This
can be demonstrated through high school and college-level course
work and service oriented work experience. Applicants must possess
good interpersonal communication skills and a discernable interest
in others.
7 . How can I enhance my chances of being selected?
The Admissions Committee will not guarantee acceptance to any candidate.
The ideal candidate:
Is knowledgeable in the field of Medical Imaging Sciences –
Radiography
Has work experience with the public
Communicates well verbally and in writing
Possesses a positive attitude, caring demeanor, and strong work
ethic
Has a proven record of academic success
8. If I am not selected this year, can I reapply in subsequent years?
Yes,
you may reapply each year.
9 . Can you receive a BS degree?
Many universities and colleges offer a BS degree for radiographers.
Northern Michigan University has an on-line BS degree available.
10 . Are college programs better than a hospital-based
program?
Hospital-based graduates tend to have more clinical experience to
master the same radiography curriculum as college-based programs.
MGHS and NMU/Finlandia provide the student the best of both worlds:
post-secondary diversity and an excellent clinical practicum.
11 . What is the starting wage for a radiographer?
Salaries for radiographers vary geographically. Starting wages in
our geographical area range from $19.00 - $24.00/hour.
12. Will I be able to replace courses in the program
with previously completed courses (ie. Anatomy, Algebra, Physics,
etc.)?
A student completing the pre-requisite courses will follow Northern
Michigan University/Finlandia's policies for transfer courses. Once
accepted into the Radiography Program a student will complete all
RAD courses. The sequential Radiography curriculum will be completed
as listed in program publications.
13. Can I receive financial aid or use my scholarships?
Yes. Financial Aid is available to all applicable students through
Northern Michigan University/Finlandia's Financial Aid Departments.
14. Will I be able to work full-time while
attending this program?
It is for each individual to honestly evaluate their abilities and determine if after the full-time commitment necessary to complete the program the individual can handle the added responsibility of full-time employment and maintain the performance standards expected by our program. The School of Radiography cannot dictate what a student does outside of the program, but past student experiences have demonstrated extreme difficulty for the student to successfully meet the requirements of both.
15. Do you allow students to attend part-time?
Our program, which is built upon a sequential curriculum, including a very active clinical practicum is unable to accommodate students seeking alternative forms of education.
