Student Policies -
Operational Information
The following information is a condensed
version of the Student Policy Manual. For a complete
copy of our policy manual please inquire with the School of Radiography
office.
ACADEMIC ADVISING/COUNSELING SERVICES:
Academic
Advising
Although a student's academic program is ultimately his or her own
responsibility, Northern Michigan University, Finlandia University,
and MGHS School faculty are available for advisement on courses,
resources, policies and procedures, and career options.
Mid-Term
Advisement
In the eighth week of each semester a mid-semester evaluation
may be conducted with a student who is not meeting academic, clinical,
or professional standards. Student and faculty advisor conduct
a one-on-one performance improvement plan.
Personal
Counseling
Counselors from the MGHS Employee Assistance Program (EAP) NMU,
and Finlandia are available for students should they have a personal
problem that is affecting their achievement in the program.
ATTENDANCE:
MGHS is a Level II Trauma Center/Express Care provider for the
Upper Peninsula.
Student
attendance for two (2) years will consist of scheduled hours Monday
through Friday from:
6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
7:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
3:00
p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Scheduled attendance times will be determined by the student’s
weekly clinical rotation.
All
student clinical practicum rotations are under direct supervison
of qualified practitioners.
Occasionally a student may be required to attend a professional conference
outside of these given times. A feasible notice time will be given.
A
student’s school week shall not exceed forty (40) hours.
Tardiness
Our program has a zero tolerance for tardiness. It is important
that students develop good professional habits. A student will
be at his/her assigned clinical rotation or didactic classroom
promptly at the scheduled start and be ready to participate.
Scheduled
Leave Time
A semester break is scheduled at the end of each sixteen (16) week
semester.
Unscheduled
Leave Time
Each student will have thirty-two (32) hours in their first year
and twenty-four (24) hours in their second year.
BOOKS/SUPPLIES/UNIFORMS:
Computers
Each
radiography student is required to have a laptop computer/printer
to complete most assignments. Laptop computers may be acquried
through Northern Michigan University.
Radiation
Monitors
Each radiography student shall be provided with two radiation
monitors that will be worn at all times while in the clinical
practicum. Radiation monitors measure the amount of occupational
radiation exposure received by the student on a monthly basis.
Evaluation of a student’s monthly occupational exposure
is reviewed by the Radiation Safety Officer and school faculty
on a monthly basis.
Student
IDs
All students are required to wear a green pictured ID at all times
in the clinical practicum.. A student’s picture and name
must be in full view.
Supplies
Student supplies are purchased by the student at their establishment
of choice. The NMU campus bookstore is available to all students.
Textbooks
Textbooks are purchased by the student prior to a course.Total cost
for two yeras is approximately $950.
Textbooks for the university courses are purchased through the University
Bookstorse at the beginning of each course.
Uniforms
Radiography students shall wear navy blue scrubs, which are purchased by the
student before the first week of school. This uniform will be worn at all
times unless the clinical rotation area requires an alternate dress code.
The
School of Radiography Patch shall be sewn 2 1/2” from the
left shoulder seam and be worn as a permanent part of the student’s
uniform.
BUILDING USAGE:
Faculty
Office Hours
Full-time faculty members maintain office hours to permit for academic
advisement, student counseling, methods of study, academic achievement,
and program operations. A faculty member is available from 6:00am
through 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
School
and Telephone Hours
Didactic Instruction:
The School of Radiography classroom is open to its students Monday
through Friday from 7:00 am to 10:30pm. Off hours of usage may
be scheduled through school faculty members.
Telephone
coverage hours are Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 4:30pm.
A voice mail system is implemented to handle all other hours.

Clinical
Instruction:
Marquette General Health System campus is open to its students
for clinical rotations Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 11:00pm.
Marquette
General Health System Clinic campus is open to its students for
clinical rotations Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00
pm.

Bulletin
Board Usage
Bulletin boards are located in the student classroom. Students
are advised to keep a constant check on these boards for information
regarding student activities. All students posting materials must
receive approval by program faculty before posting personal materials.
Dining
Services
MGHS maintains a cafeteria as a service to employees, students,
and guests. Northern Michigan University provides selection from
their "ala cart" meal plans for students also.
Cell
Phones
Personal cell phones or pagers are not permitted
on MGHS main campus due to the possibility of interference with
medical equipment.
Housing
A variety of housing options are available through NMU residence
halls and apartments.
Lockers
Each student will be assigned a locker in a combination access
locker room.
Parking
Information
Parking permits are required for MGHS and/or NMU. Each student
will receive a parking sticker for their vehicle and parking access
card for MGHS. All students will follow hospital and university
parking regulations.
Recreational
Services
NMU recreational services are available to students. Local health
promotion services are also available at reduced membership rates.
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted on the health system campus.
RECORD CHANGES/RELEASE:
Record
Changes
It is the responsibility of each student to notify school faculty
of a change in legal name, mailing address, or telephone number.
The School of Radiography will not be held responsible for official
information transfers if not notified of any of the aforementioned
communication avenue changes. A student may document a record
change by submitting a record change form from a faculty member.
Record
Releases
All student and applicant records are considered confidential. A release of
confidential information must be completed by the student to authorize the
release of specified information and recipient.
CHILDREN ON CAMPUS:
Children
The School of Radiography is situated in a healthcare setting. As a healthcare,
safety, and confidentiality precaution for the child and the patients we
serve children are restricted from campus. Children who are visiting the
campus with permission must be under adult supervision at all times.
DIDACTIC
INSTRUCTION:
Didactic instruction is provided by physical or distance classroom attendance.
Students completing their 3-5 semester clinical practicum have the option to attend class by teleconferencing or the virtual classroom.
Continuity of learning to distant students will be provided by:
- Hard packet copies – handouts, reference material, assignments, quizzes, and tests will be provided through health systems courier, US mail, or fax
- Quizzes and tests will be proctored by the affiliate clinical instructor or designated replacement
- Electronic quizzes, tests, or student grades are student selected password protected
- Faculty check-ins and tutorials to facilitate one-on-one interaction will be facilitated by telephone, e-mail, blogs, wikis, or discussion groups
- Didactic lecture will be provided by teleconferencing
- Teleconferencing difficulties will be addressed by using Skype
- Additional e-learning systems such as the Accordant System, pod casts, and DVDs will be used
Students completing an RAD course through distance learning will not be charged an additional fee.
Students completing an RAD course through distance learning will be reviewed on the same grading scale as those students present.
Students completing an RAD course through distance learning will be provided a course/instructor evaluation. Course/instructor evaluations are completed electronically.
Distance students have the right to attend didactic lecture at any time they feel appropriate in the Program classroom.
Program publications – application packet, web site, public relations articles, and the student policy manual will advise applicants/students of the availability of distance learning. In addition, university advisors and program faculty will be available to answer student concerns.
Program faculty, by assessing how existing tools may be used to develop effective distance learning strategies will provide students in distance learning the resources to achieve an equitable educational experience.
Academic
Dishonesty
An incidence of “cheating” in any form is considered
to be academic dishonesty and will not be tolerated. Academic
dishonesty will result in disciplinary action. The first offense
will result in a grade of “0”. A following offense
will result in dismissal from the program.
Class
Cancellations
Class cancellation announcements will be posted on the classroom bulletin board
if a faculty member is ill or has other professional responsibilities.
Weather
related cancellations will follow program policy.
Course
Orientation
It is the student’s responsibility to have a clear understanding of each
course’s requirements. Expectations vary by course and instructor. The
student will receive a syllabus at the beginning of each course that will include:

CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY:
Marquette General Health System strives to provide a safe environment
for patients, employees, students, and visitors by establishing
and maintaining an effective safety program. Marquette General
Health System, The Upper Peninsula Medical Center, Bell Memorial
Hospital, and Northern Michigan University are committed to assuring
that the School of Radiography has a safeenvironment for its students
to learn and in keeping parents and students well informed about
campus safety and security.
The
School of Radiography faculty and students are expected to observe
Marquette General Health System’s policies regarding security
and safety.
Criminal
Background Check
For
the protection of our patients, students, and Health System, it
is the policy of MGHS to secure a criminal background check of
all applicants and students. Prior to acceptance, each student
is required to sign a Notice/Authoriztion of Background Search.
Criminal Backround Checks will be conducted for each state a student
has resided in for the previous fifteen years. In accordance with
State Law, positions that regularly provide direct services to
patients will be prohibited if the individual has been:
Convicted of a felony or an attempt or conspiracy
to commit a felony within fifteen years immediately preceding the date of application.
Convicted of a misdemeanor involving abuse,
neglect, assault, battery or criminal sexual
conduct or involving fraud or theft against
a vulnerable adult as defined in Section 145M of
the Michigan Penal Code, or a State or Federal
crime that is substantially similar to such
misdemeanors within the ten years immediately
preceding the date of application.
As
required by law, each applicant/student shall agree to report
in writing their arrest or conviction to MGHS for any criminal
offenses describe above.
An
unacceptable criminal background check result or falsification
of an application or supportive documents will be grounds for
non-acceptance or dismissal from the program.
Unless
otherwise required by State, Federal, of local law, a criminal
conviction will not necessarily prohibit acceptance. Factors such
as, but not limited to, age at time of offense, length of time
since conviction, and seriousness and nature of violation will
be considered.
Random
criminal background checks may be conducted on present students
to insure the quality and safety of care for our patients and
staff.
Emergency
Procedures
All accidents occurring on campus must be reported immediately to a school
faculty member, clinical instructor, or supervising staff member. Campus
nurses are located in the Employee Health Services Department. An Incident
report must be completed, signed, and submitted to the appropriate authorities.
Eye
Protection
All students shall wear appropriate eye safety apparel in designated
clinical rotations or when a splash may be immenant.
Health
Insurance
A student is responsible for obtaining his/her own health insurance.
Participation in a health insurance coverage program is strongly
recommended by the School.
Healthcare
Policy
All students have access to medical care through the Emergency
Department, Walk-In Center, Family Care Practice, NMU Health Center,
or local physicians. Non-school related medical attention payment
will be the responsibility of the student personally or at the
expense of their health insurance company.
Hospital/School
of Radiography Orientation
All students will complete a hospital orientation and school orientation week
prior to their first semester.
Infection
Control
All students will receive instruction of risk reduction methods for exposure
to substances with the potential for creating a health hazard in the healthcare
setting during orientation week.
Performance
Standards
All diagnostic imaging students are required to perform a variety
of activities as a proficient health care giver. The following
list of performance standards and work capacity are required for
admission and progression in our program.
Communication
Abilities sufficient for interaction with others in verbal, written,
electronic
form.
Mobility
Physical abilities sufficient to move from room to room and maneuver in small spaces.
Motor Skills
Bross and fine motor abilities sufficient to provide safe and effective diagnostic imaging care.
Hearing
Auditory ability sufficient to monitor, assess, and acquire health needs and information.
Visual
Visual ability sufficient for observation and assessment in patient care and the evaluation of diagnostic images.
Tactile
Tactle ability sufficient for patient assessment and performance of skilled patient care activities in diagnostic imaging.
Mental/Intell
Capacity to meet the requirements of procedural standards of speed and accuracy. Integrate didactic instruction into clinical performance.
Cognitive/reasoning
Concentration,
memory, ability to focus and prioritize, making judgments.
Behavioral
Tolerance
for stress, ability to handle hostile situations, focus on tasks.
Work Capacity
Medium work.
Diagnostic
imagers may be exposed to low levels of ionizing radiation and
are expected to provide health care to patients who may have communicable
diseases. Chemicals used to process radiographic images may cause
skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
Pregnancy/Voluntary
Disclosure
A student radiographer has the right to declare, not declare,
or undeclare her pregnancy.
Standard
(Universal) Precautions
Standard precautions are methods of infection control that treats all human
blood and body fluids as a possibility of infectious pathogens. All students
will receive instruction on Standard Precautions during their orientation
week.
ORGANIZATIONS
American Society of Radiologic Technologists
All students are required to maintain student membership in the ASRT.
Michigan Society of Radiologic Technologists
All students are required to maintain student membership in the MSRT.
Michigan Omega Chapter of the Lambda Nu National Honor Society
All students who qualify for membership may apply to the national honor society.
PROGRAM COMPLETION
Program
completion will occur (in 21 months) when the student has attained
a passing grade of 80% or above in all academic courses and 83%
or above in all clinical courses. A student must complete the required
number of Mandatory and Elective core competencies in the clinical
practicum. Graduates of the program will receive a certificate of
achievement from Marquette General Health System and an Associate
Degree in Allied Health from Northern Michigan University or Finlandia
University.
EDUCATIONAL
PATHWAYS:
MGHS
School of Radiography has established an academic pathway with Northern
Michigan University to enable program graduates to complete a Baccalaureate
Degree.
REGISTRY EXAMINATION
All
registry exams are now completed through a CBT (computer based
testing) program with the results reported to the student within
two to four weeks.
JOB
PLACEMENT:
MGHS
does not guarantee employment upon program completion. The School
of Radiography and Northern Michigan University - Job Search Center
will offer assistance in preparing a resume, interviewing, and
recommendation letters. MGHS will also post current geographic
position openings.
