School of Radiography

 

APPLICATION PROCESS:

 

Marquette General Health System School of Radiography seeks to admit students who can provide evidence of potential to succeed in the health care profession of Radiologic Sciences. Applicants who meet the following criteria will be fully considered on an individual basis for admission.

 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

 

An applicant must:


1) Have the academic skills that will allow them to enroll in college level general education courses such as College Composition and College Algebra. This may require testing through an Academic Skills Assessment Program (ASAP) administered by a college or university.

 

2) Complete all pre-requisite general educational courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above and a minimum grade of C in College Composition II, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology.

 

3 ) Provide all application materials listed by submission dates.

 

ADMISSION PROCESS:    January 1 – May 1

 

The application process is completed in four parts. All requirements and submission dates from Part I and Part II must be met to participate in Part III. Student selection is based upon a point system for the following criteria: Supportive Courses Cumulative GPA, Community Service/Healthcare Experience, Interview/Letter of Intent/Job Shadow. Only selected applicants will complete Part IV of the application process.

 

Part I

1) Pre-requisite General Education Courses:


An applicant must have completed the following pre-requisite general education courses by May 1 of each application year. Pre-requisite transfer courses will follow NMU or Finlandia policies.

(Human Anatomy and Human Physiology must have been completed within a ten year period. Introduction to Computers must have been completed within a five year period). (A higher level course may be substituted for MA 104/MAT 140, SO 101, CH 105/CHM 145, CIS 110/CIS 102, HL 101).

 

2) Admission Advisement Session:

Admission advisement session attendance is required prior to job shadowing and submission of application. Advisement sessions will be held in the School of Radiography Program classroom (NMU University Center - Room 2306). Sessions are scheduled in 2-hour blocks. Program faculty will provide definitions and information on the role and advancements of a radiographer, program highlights, program operations, and the application process. Attendance will award an applicant a certificate of completion that must accompany their application as an attachment.

 

     Admission Advisement Session Dates:

           October 8, 2010             10:00 am - 12)00 pm

           February 12, 2011         10:00 am - 12:00 pm

           May 13, 2011                 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Part II:

An applicant must submit the following by May 1:


1) Completed official program application/attachments.

         Advisement Session Certificate

         Letter of Introduction (Listed below)

2) Official transcripts of all high school, college, or military courses. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the providing institution.

 

3) A letter of introduction/intent attached to program application.

a. Maximum 3 pages
  i. Short autobiography (life experiences, hobbies, aspirations)
  ii. Reasons for selecting Radiography as a future career
 

iii. Future short and long term goals

 

4) Provide documentation of at least 3 hours of job shadowing in a Diagnostic Imaging Department.

  a. Documentation must be completed by a Diagnostic Imaging Department manager or   supervisor
  b. Documentation may be completed by MGHS School of Radiography
 
  i. Schedule a job shadow at MGHS (906) 225-4916
   

5) Meet the Performance Standards and Work Capacity for the profession of Diagnostic Imaging.

  a. Read MGHS School of Radiography Performance Standards (found in application packet or web site)
  b. Make a self assessment
  c. Complete the 2 sections under Performance Standards on the program application

 

Part III
An applicant who has completed and meets all the requirements of Part I and Part II of the application process will then be invited to participate in a personal interview with the Admissions Committee. Interviews will be conducted the third week in May.

All applicants will be evaluated equitably according to the following point-award system. The highest ranking applicants will be notified of acceptance into the program.

 

Supportive Course Cumulative GPA:

The following courses will be included in this GPA: College Composition II, College Algebra, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology.

      3.8 - 4.0       7 points               3.0 - 3.19       3 points

      3.6 - 3.79     6 points               2.8 - 2.99       2 points

Community Service/Healthcare Experience:

The following points will be granted for the hours/years of community service or education in a healthcare field. Length of previous service or experience will be documented on the application form.

     1 year or more              7 points               10 - 14 hours     3 points

     6 months or greater     6 points                6 - 9 hours         2 points

     20 or more hours          5 points                5 hours              1 point

     15 - 19 hours                4 points

 

Personal Interview:

An applicant's interview points will be granted from the following:

     Motivation                     1 -3 points           3  questions

     Dedication                     1 -3 points           3 questions

     Managing Change         1 - 3 points          3 questions

     Accountability                1 - 3 points          3 questions

     Interpersonal Skills       1 -3 points            6 sections

    

 

Part IV

Only those applicants accepted into the program will complete Part IV of the Admission Process. This includes: student immunizations and a criminal background check.

1) Health Status:

For the protection of patients, students, and employees, and in compliance with state regulations, MGHS requires all students to be properly immunized. Documentation of the following vaccinations must be provided to MGHS by the first day of student orientation:

      MMR immunizations 1 and 2 or Rubella Titer

      Rubeola immunization or Titer

      Chicken pox - Proof of having Chicken pox, Chicken pox immunization, or Varicella Titer

      TB Skin Test - 1 month prior to program start

      Hepatitis B vaccination (series of 3) Signed Verification of Hepatitis B status or declination

Please be advised the cost of the required immunizations is the responsibility of the student. (Health care services may be available at local health departments or university health centers)

We also encourage:

      DTAP - Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis immunization

      Influenza immunizations

      Meningitis immunization

2) Criminal Background Check:

It is the policy of MGHS to secure a criminal background check on all students if their clinical rotation exceeds 120 hours. Each radiography student will complete and sign a Disclosure/Consent Form to have a criminal background check completed. This authorization form will be provided to the student and shall be returned to MGHS by August 1. Criminal Background Checks will be completed at no cost to the student.

Please be advised: Conviction of a crime may affect a student's eligibility for participation in a clinical rotation or completion of the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) licensure examination. A student with a conviction record is advised to contact the American Registry of Radiologic Technology at 615.687.0048 or at www.arrt.org in regards to their ability to complete the licensure examination upon program completion.

 

ADMISSION POLICY:

 

The top sixteen cumulative scores representative of a good academic standing, motivation, dedication, adaptability, good interpersonal skills, and a discernable interest in others will be accepted into the program. In the event there are two or more applicants with the same point total, the highest GPA will be used to break the tie.

Applicants will receive notification of their acceptance into the program by formal letter in June. Information in regards to program entrance status is mailed to the last address provided. It is the student's responsibility  to maintain current contact information. A student that cannot be reached will forfeit their position of acceptance.

Applicants who are not selected in the initial round, are ranked highest to lowest according to their total award points and assigned alternate status. Alternates are offered enrollment in ranked order if a selected candidate declines admission or does not qualify based on health status or criminal background search. Alternate status terminates when the new school year begins in August. Those wishing to be considered for the following year must reapply. MGHS School of Radiography does not maintain an applicant waiting list.
