Surgery, Bariatric

Bariatric surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery, focusing on surgical weight loss. A bariatric surgeon performs surgery on the digestive system, rearranging the anatomy to provide a "tool" which allows patients to lose weight. To determine who is a candidate for bariatric surgery, there are strict patient selection criteria including weight, body mass index, and others such as co-existing medical problems. The success of the surgery is also dependent upon the patient's commitment to improving their health and quality of life.
