Surgery, Spine

Spine surgeons perform complex surgeries of the spinal column, which is the flexible column of bones from the skull to the pelvis. Spine surgery involves the bones, cartilage, spinal cord, and surrounding structures. Types of procedures performed by spine surgeons include: treatment of spinal deformities (curvatures of the spine), including scoliosis, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis; treatment of ruptured or displaced discs; treatment of spinal stenosis including laminectomy and decompression and/or spinal fusion; treatment of spinal trauma; removal of spinal tumors; implantation of devices to maintain or improve mobility of the spine; implantation of devices to support the spine; treatment of birth defects such as spina bifida. Spine surgeons also provide non-surgical management of spinal disorders such as spinal cord injury, spinal stenosis, and deformities of the spine in children and adults. Non-operative management may include injections, bracing and/or prescribing physical therapy.
