You
can now get the newest Natural Medicines CE course Natural Medicines
in Clinical Management of Insomnia.*
You can also use any of the many prior courses on many other conditions.
All are accredited for physicians, pharmacists, NPs, PAs, CNMs, RDs.
We continue to make updates to Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database
every business day. Here are a few of special interest to you.
• Calcium isn't just good for your bones...it's good for your waistline
too. New research now shows that increasing calcium intake can increase
weight loss. But calcium doesn't work alone. When calcium is combined
with a lower-calorie diet people tend to lose more weight and body
fat. Have most people aim for 1000-1500 mg/day for preventing bone
loss AND helping with weight loss.
•
Enzyte is now being promoted for "natural male enhancement." It's
a mixture of lots of herbs including puncture vine, arginine, Panax
ginseng, yohimbe, saw palmetto, and 10 other ingredients. Arginine
and ginseng have some evidence to support use for erectile dysfunction.
But there is no reliable proof for the other ingredients. Tell patients
not to expect measurable benefit from this product. Also, point out
that the FDA is taking action against this company. This is the same
manufacturer that sells Avlimil for women's health. They also sell
Rovicid and Rogisen.
•
Airborne is in the news again, since Oprah gave it such notoriety on
her show. Lot's of people are asking for it. This is the one that's "Developed
by a school teacher who was sick of catching colds in class!" It's
a typical concoction of vitamins and herbs. Explain that there is
nothing particularly special about this product. There is no proof
that it
fends off a cold any better than a multivitamin or a healthy diet.
• Vitamin C is now in the hot seat. Last month it was vitamin E. New
research suggests that postmenopausal diabetes patients who take
over 300 mg/day of vitamin C have an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular
disease. This is preliminary and needs to be studied deeper. In the
meantime...unless there is a real good reason to take vitamin C...advise
postmenopausal women with diabetes not to overdo the vitamin C.
