Sue deGroot, MSW
Sue deGroot joined the staff of MGHS in June 2008 as an Outpatient Mental Health Therapist. Prior to relocating back to the UP in 2007, Sue had a private mental health practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan for eight years, following 24 years of Medical Social Work Practice at Spectrum Health-Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan. During her years of medical social work practice, Sue held specialty assignments in and developed expertise in the fields of Child Abuse and Neglect, Burn Medicine, Diabetes, Infectious Disease, Neuro-trauma, Neo-natal medicine, Pediatrics, Critical Care and Outpatient Specialty Clinics.
Sue is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, passing the exam for the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW) in 2000 and holds the specialty credential of Certified Social Worker in Health Care (C-SWHC). She received her undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. Sue earned her Masters Degree in Social Work at Western Michigan University in 1986.
Although she only recently returned to the Upper Peninsula, Sue attended Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee until 6th grade, and visited family in the area frequently in the intervening years before relocating here in 2007.
At MGHS, Sue serves on the Nutrition and Medicine committee and is interested in the interfaces between environment, physical disease and mental health. She also has specialty interest in Bipolar Disorder and hormonal issues affecting mood. She is available to see children five and up as well as adults of all ages with any type of mental health issue.
